Modern Medicine Saves Lives Every Day

I have had diabetes my entire life, and I am very thankful for the fact that modern medical discoveries have helped me live a happy, healthy life despite my disease. I have had to watch what I eat and take medications daily for most of my life, and while i used to feel like I was "missing out" when other children were able to eat sugary candy and I wasn't, I eventually learned that sugar-free candy tastes great. I am always keeping up on the latest diabetes research, and while researching, I have also learned about many other diseases and ailments and how they are treated and controlled. I know others are too busy to browse a bunch of medical websites, like I like to do, so I decided to start a blog that others can visit that contains information on a variety of medical topics all in one place!

Is Liposuction a Better Alternative to Breast Reduction Surgery?

For Content

If you're tired of dealing with shoulder pain, backaches, and pointed stares or comments about the size of your chest, you might be seriously considering surgery to reduce the size of your breasts. While this surgery has been life-changing for many women, it's not without its own downsides, and you may wonder whether there are any effective alternatives to this procedure. In fact, liposuction -- often thought of only in connection with jiggly thighs or a post-pregnancy  belly -- may be able to give you the smaller and perkier chest you've always desired. Here is more about how liposuction can reduce the size of your breasts, as well as what factors may make you a good candidate for this option.

What are some advantages of liposuction as a way to reduce breast size?

Two of the largest potential disadvantages to breast reduction surgery can be the scarring and recovery time -- and both these factors are significantly diminished with liposuction.

During a traditional breast reduction surgery, the surgeon will make an incision around the nipple, as well as a T-shaped incision from the nipple to the underside of the breast. Excess tissue and skin are removed from the edges of these incisions, and the nipple is then placed in its correct position on the new, smaller breast.

During liposuction, the surgeon will target a hollow needle, or cannula, toward the areas of the breast from which fat will be removed. This needle literally sucks out the fat cells immediately adjacent to its tip. The surgeon can direct the needle to specific areas that may benefit from a bit more reshaping than others.

Because liposuction is less invasive than breast reduction surgery, the recovery time is also diminished, and the recovery experience may be much easier

When may you not be a good candidate for breast liposuction?

If you're significantly over your ideal body weight, you may find that liposuction isn't quite as effective as it would be for a smaller patient. This is simply an issue of scale -- removing 5 pounds of fat from a 100-pound person is much more noticeable than removing 5 pounds of fat from a 200-pound person. If you've been planning on losing weight anyway, you might find that getting yourself below a certain weight could make liposuction a more feasible option.

However, if you would like (or need) a substantial amount of breast tissue removed, breast reduction surgery may still be your best choice. Under these circumstances, it's unlikely that liposuction alone would be sufficient to reduce your breasts to a manageable size, and you might need subsequent surgery to remove excess skin on and around your breasts. Be sure to talk to a professional like Dr. Robert Fortino Premier Weight Loss Physicians before deciding which procedure is best for you.
