About Me
Modern Medicine Saves Lives Every Day

I have had diabetes my entire life, and I am very thankful for the fact that modern medical discoveries have helped me live a happy, healthy life despite my disease. I have had to watch what I eat and take medications daily for most of my life, and while i used to feel like I was "missing out" when other children were able to eat sugary candy and I wasn't, I eventually learned that sugar-free candy tastes great. I am always keeping up on the latest diabetes research, and while researching, I have also learned about many other diseases and ailments and how they are treated and controlled. I know others are too busy to browse a bunch of medical websites, like I like to do, so I decided to start a blog that others can visit that contains information on a variety of medical topics all in one place!

Advantages Of The Gastric Sleeve Option For Bariatric Surgery

For Content

Bariatric surgery has become more common over the years, and as it has become more common, doctors have developed new approaches and procedures. One common form of bariatric surgery is the gastric sleeve operation, which isolates part of the stomach, turning it into a tube or sleeve for food to pass through. It is no coincidence that this procedure is more common than the others. After all, it has a lot of advantages over other bariatric surgeries.

1. The upper portion of the stomach is removed

The upper portion of the stomach is the part of the stomach that secretes the most ghrelin, a hormone that triggers feelings of hunger. Some other bariatric procedures leave this part of the stomach intact, but the gastric sleeve procedure mostly eliminates it. So not only will you feel full faster because your stomach is smaller, but you'll also have fewer hunger pangs to fight off.

2. No adjustments are made to the intestine

Some earlier versions of bariatric surgery bypassed not only part of the stomach, but also the first part of the small intestine. This meant that patients would not absorb nutrients from their food as efficiently, which meant that nutrient deficiencies were common post-surgery. The gastric sleeve procedure leaves the entire length of the small and large intestine intact. This decreases the risk of deficiencies and means you won't have to take as many supplements after surgery, although your doctor will probably still recommend some because of your lower overall food intake.

3. There are no foreign bodies involved

You may have heard of some bariatric procedures that involve balloons or rubber bands over parts of the digestive tract. With these procedures, there is some risk, albeit small, of the foreign bodies becoming displaced, entangled, or broken. There are no foreign items used in gastric sleeve surgery, so this is not something you need to worry about.

4. You can eat most foods

Because the intestine is left intact, and because the stomach left behind still works normally, you can still eat most foods after gastric sleeve surgery. You will have to eat less of them, of course, but there should not be any off-limits foods.

Talk to your surgeon about various bariatric surgery options. They can let you know what the best options are for your body. But do not be surprised if a gastric sleeve is the approach they recommend.
